HMRC submission errors

When you make online submissions to HMRC if the submission fails you may receive an error.

To check the error

  • 1. Go to the Summary tab.
  • 2. Under HMRC Real Time Information (RTI) Scheme, locate the failed submission then click Resolve Issue.

The error code and reason appears.

Error code 1046

Authentication Failure: The supplied user credentials failed verification for the requested service.

This means HMRC doesn’t recognise the details you’re using to make your submission. The details in Sage One Payroll must match the details held for your company on the Government Gateway.

To resolve you should check:

  • You can log into the Government Gateway and your account is active and submission options are available.
  • Your company name and address are correct in Settings > Business Settings.
  • Your company details are correct in Settings > Payroll Settings.
  • The length of your Government Gateway user ID and password are up to 12 characters long. If your user ID or password is 13 characters long, then try using the first 12 characters.

If you’re unable to login or the error still occurs, please contact HMRC online Service Helpdesk on 0300 200 3600.

Error code 4065

Invalid content found at element

This error occurs when submitting in year forms and when a particular element in the submission has a value, or contains a character, that is not acceptable to HMRC.

You should check for the following:

  • Spaces before forenames and surnames in employee records.
  • Incorrect national insurance numbers. For example the letter is missing from the end.
  • No second line of address in employee records.
  • Spaces at the beginning of address in employee records.
  • Spaces at the beginning of business address in Settings > Payroll Settings > Business Settings.

Error code 4085

Value doesn’t have the correct format

You should check the following to resolve the issue:

  • Spaces before forenames and surnames in employee records.
  • Incorrect national insurance numbers. For example the letter is missing from the end.
  • No second line of address in employee records.
  • Spaces at the beginning of address in employee records.
  • Spaces at the beginning of business address in Settings > Payroll Settings > Business Settings..

Error code 5001

Your submission contains an unrecognised Name Space in Location: EIR Envelope.

This means that you’re trying to submit details for a previous tax year that HMRC are no longer accepting submissions for.

If you need to submit payroll information for a previous tax year, for more information about what to do next, you must contact the HMRC’s Employer Helpline on 0300 200 3200.

Error code 7806

This submission cannot be accepted as it does not fall within the eligible filing period.

This means that HMRC are not expecting you to start filing RTI returns until a later date. You should contact HMRC and ask them to set your RTI start date to the correct date.

Error code 7818

This submission cannot be accepted as this employer scheme has been cancelled.

For guidance with this issue, you must contact the HMRC’s Employer Helpline on 0300 200 3200.

Error code 7911

The entry [NOPAYMENTDATETO] must be no later than the 5th of the current tax month. Please check.

This means you can’t send a nil payment EPS before the end of the tax month. You should wait until after the 5th of the tax month before you submit the return.
